Internal Battery Feature

Provides the function of an optional local uninterruptible power source that enables 20 to 90 minutes of full power for the IBM S/390 Multiprise 2000. Enhances the robustness of the IBM CMOS power design.

Internal Disk implements mirroring (having a duplicate copy), to maintain data availability in the event of a disk failure. Adapters are also mirrored, helping improve data availability. Mirroring can enhance performance because the data will be read from the least busy disk. Storage can be concurrently maintained while the processor continues to function. SCSI 2 FW adapter cards and HDDs can be hot swapped.

The Internal Disk Fast Write function improves response time for batch and write-intensive workloads, as well as improving system throughput, and is supported on all models with the Internal Battery Feature.

PR/SM™ LPAR Sharing of logical volumes enables logical partitions (LPARs) to share the same data on the Internal Disk. This capability simplifies data management and saves disk storage space.

Two additional licensed internal code (LIC) enhancements further optimize performance: "Search Assist" reduces steps in searching for records on disk; and VM "Minidisk Recognition" reduces data transfers between disk and cache.

Internal Disk logical volume mapping flexibly expands your ability to move data from older disk storage to the S/390 Multiprise 2000 Internal Disk without converting formats. Internal Disk supports seven different logical volume mappings.

Continuous power source

The Internal Battery Feature (IBF) enables between 20 and 90 minutes of full power capability for the S/390 Multiprise in the event of a power disturbance or outage. With the installation of an IBF, no additional floor space is required on the raised floor or in other facility areas. Actually, there may be reductions of up to 25 percent in floor space over an external uninterruptible power supply.**

Each IBF complements the N + 1 front-end power technology. The IBF design is consistent with IBM's CMOS server power technology and experiences no energy conversion losses between conventional independent uninterruptible power supply support of a server installation.

Internal Disk is powered by the same N + 1 power subsystem and protected by the same Internal Battery Feature (IBF) that supports the S/390 Multiprise 2000. With an IBF, Internal Disk Fast Write function is enabled. The IBF has redundant batteries and is concurrently maintained.

The IBF has self-testing capability and is integrated into the diagnostics, including Remote Service Facility (RSF) support.

IBM offers you the option for connection to either single phase power source (available on models 202-225) or three-phase power source to power the new models, via an independent, isolated, redundant dual power feed design.

e-business

The S/390 Open Systems Adapter 2 (OSA-2), a fully integrated S/390 hardware feature, helps to deliver the benefits of client/server computing throughout your enterprise. It provides full duplex and switched line operation.

OSA-2 conforms to industry standards for both 10 and 100 Mb Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI LANs and ATM, thus enabling OSA-2 to use the current data center infrastructure to provide connectivity to your currently installed LAN backbones, high-speed workstations, intelligent hubs, bridges and routers in a heterogeneous multivendor environment.

OSA-2 conveniently plugs into any CEC cage or I/O expansion cage, delivering integrated, direct access to SNA/APPN® and TCP/IP applications. OSA-2 supports your industry-standard open interfaces to provide direct LAN connectivity to SNA/APPN and TCP/IP clients from the S/390 server.

Secure environment

The optional cryptographic coprocessor feature is offered on the S/390 Multiprise 2000, providing for data privacy using the Data Encryption Standard (DES). DES Master Key, 128 bits, affords a high degree of security. DES triple-length keys are used to protect application managed keys. Hardware support of 1024-bit arithmetic and internal nonvolatile memory are protected within a single CMOS secure chip.

The Trusted Key Entry (TKE) feature is a workstation which provides further restricted access.

Software with a proven track record

S/390 Multiprise 2000 gives you three operating environments -- VM/ESA, VSE/ESA and OS/390. These operating systems form the foundation for the software components of the packaged offering.

Preparing for the next century

With the S/390 Multiprise 2000 and updated S/390 operating environment, migrating your applications to handle 4-digit date fields can be easier because they are Year 2000 ready now to help you bridge the transition to the next century.

A total package

The S/390 Multiprise 2000 package offers advanced CMOS technology, system software including the latest versions of VM/ESA®, VSE/ESA™ and OS/390™ operating systems, application software, maintenance and services.

Servers for the 21st century

The S/390 Multiprise 2000 comprises sixteen general purpose CMOS servers. There are eight uni-processor models, three two-way, two three-way, two four-way and a five-way processor, each with extensive upgrade capability. In 1998, upgrades will be available from the S/390 Multiprise 2000 to a 9672 Parallel Enterprise Server™. S/390 Multiprise general purpose servers are for use in a stand-alone environment.

The S/390 Multiprise 2000 can do so much more with less. It uses much less energy and takes up less space than other air or water cooled systems. For example, a comparison of the S/390 Multiprise 2000 to the 3090 class processor shows energy, space and IBM maintenance reductions of up to 95 percent, while delivering increased engine performance and providing a larger single system image.

Exact savings will depend on configurations and energy rates (and will vary from customer to customer); however, the S/390 Multiprise 2000 provides superior environmentals. Compared to your current installation, an analysis may show that energy and cooling savings justify the replacement of your existing system.

The S/390 Multiprise 2000 package includes a selection of installation and migration services designed to assist you in moving to this exciting new S/390 platform.

Why Internal Disk storage?

Internal Disk is one of many innovative features that are available with S/390 Multiprise 2000. It can replace or augment channel-attached DASD. With Internal Disk you can expect superb data availability, outstanding storage capacity and high performance.

Internal Disk uses the System Assist Processor (SAP) for control unit function. Processor memory is used for disk storage caching and provides the most flexible cache of any S/390 storage subsystem.
