Established in 1973 by the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is a Centre of Excellence in the field of management education. The Institute firmly believes in the importance of management education and the critical role today's students play in managing the highly competitive and varied businesses of the future. To this end, candidates from diverse backgrounds are selected and exposed to an environment that fosters ideas, collaborations and results. The location of the Institute offers the advantage of ready access to some of the leading corporate houses in the country which helps in integrating classroom knowledge with practical experience. Keeping in pace with the rapidly changing industry needs, the evolving programme content offers the students a wide range of electives enabling them to develop a broad perspective. This, along with ongoing interaction with the industry, ensures a deeper understanding of practical problems. The Institute also lays emphasis on developing ability to adapt to the fast changing environment. Efforts are made to achieve this through specific courses which are of contemporary relevance. IIMB graduates share a strong sense of community reflecting their shared experiences and professional goals. The environment at IIMB is cosmopolitan, with its students drawn from all corners of the country and from diverse social and academic backgrounds. IIMB, through student and faculty exchanges, Innovative programmes, research conferences and workshops, is making a concerted effort to internationalise its programmes and operations. Admission to IIMBs PGP programme has been opened to NRIs and foreign nationals since 1994. IIMB and the University of Buckingham,UK have established a link with the support of the British Council and the Overseas Development Agency (ODA) to develop Action Learning Programmes for the growth of small and medium enterprises. The Wharton Business School has invited two of our faculty, from the areas of Corporate Strategy and Economics & Social Sciences, to visit Wharton during the Spring semester commencing January 1996, under the Harry Reynolds International Visiting Professorship Programme. IIMB is planning a workshop at Bangalore on " Entrepreneurship and Globalisation in India" in December 1996, jointly with the Wharton Business School. Also, IIMB and The Sloan School of Management, MIT (Cambridge, USA) are actively exploring avenues for collaboration. A student exchange programme with the Melbourne Business School is also in the offing. Indian
