Fashion involves the design of any wearable apparel that is appealing and in step with the times. Fashion Design, in itself, therefore, covers a variety of occupations, from those in textiles and finished garments to accessories, leather, footwear, jewellery, etc.

The greater part of the industry, however , concentrates on high-volume production of affordable garments to suit the tastes of large numbers of people. Moreover, even in the exclusive realm of haute couture, fashion is a business rather than an art form.

Work

The fashion industry offers equal opportunity to men and women, and youth is no barrier to success. Fashion Designers can choose a career in the raw materials industry, as fabric designers or stylists, handling designing, printing and weaving, or in the ready-made sector in a clothing company or export house.

Their work involves not just creating new styles of clothing and accessories, but they are also responsible for the execution of the their ideas and designs, co-ordinating with tailors and cutters, preparing final drawings for presentation, fabric selection and co-ordination of the lines, keeping the latest trends in mind.

Fashion designers can also work in garment export organisations as merchandisers, or fashion co-ordinators, making fabric selections, meeting buyers and taking decisions regarding design, colour and fabric , and keeping abreast of market trends.

Costume designing for theatre and films is another area that is gaining a lot of recognition today. This is a highly creative field, involving study and research in the period and setting of the film, and of the characters portrayed.

Other areas include fashion show choreography, or in the area of writing for fashion publications , or in fashion publicity.

In this creative field, intrinsic interest is a major pre-requisite. There are many successful designers with no formal training in the profession, who have made a success of this profession. However, training hones a natural talent or flair for designing.
