Home Science as a discipline includes subjects ranging over biological and physical sciences covering biochemistry, basic chemistry, biology, physics(environmental), human physiology, health and hygiene; the social sciences including economics, sociology, housekeeping , home management, domestic engineering, child development, tailoring, textile and clothing. With training spread over such a varied area, not surprisingly, Home Science equips one for jobs in many spheres - hotel industry, food industry, teaching, canteens, health clubs, hospitals, social service institutions, and so on. The work is challenging, interesting and varied. There is also great scope for working on one's own providing services and consultancy in any of the above areas.

A scientific bent of mind, common sense; manual dexterity; practicality; organizing ability; an aptitude for acquiring domestic skills; ability to interact with people; an academic approach to household problems; ability to express oneself.

Courses/Training

As a subject Home Science can be taken up for study at the Plus graduation level when the three -year B Sc. (Home Science) courses are available at many of the universities in the country and at some of the Agricultural Universities too (for girls). After successful completion of the B.Sc. degree in Home Science it is possible to continue and take up the M.Sc. Home Science course of two years' duration. During the M.Sc. programme one can specialise in any one of these; Home Management; Textiles & Clothing; Child Development; Food Science & Nutrition; Dietetics; Extension Education, allied areas.

Usually the B.Sc. Home Science course is open to those who have completed their Plus Two or equivalent examination with the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The Agricultural Universities where the Home Science course is offered conduct an Entrance Examination on the basis of which applications are screened.

Prospects/Placements

Home sciences qualifications can lead to executive cadre placements in industry (hospitality, catering, food), in teaching or in research, production or service. Teaching (at the college / graduate) level is only open to post graduates in the discipline. Home Science graduates can opt for assignment in teaching at the secondary level.

Private consultancy service in the wide field of this discipline can be very lucrative and it is picking up sure and fast. It is essential to study and set up either on one's own or with some friends.

Prospects are good whether in a job or on one's own as the services industry is the one which is looking up these days and Home Science is one of the prime providers of services.
