Architects are professions who design all types of buildings and built environments, supervise their construction and serve as technical expert for any building activity. A graduate architect will find a job in a consulting firm or work in any private or Government organization. He/she can start his/her own practice as an architect and can continue this through his/her active life. He/she can also pursue higher studies in architecture, city and regional planning, industrial and visual communication design or even management. He/she can even take up tacking career in architecture, planning, interior design and industrial design. An architect is required to be trained both as well as a technologist. An artist so as to design and industrial design. An architect is required to be trained technologist to deal with the complex constructional, functional and technological aspects of buildings. The training of architects, therefore, includes development of creative and aesthetic design skills as well as acquisition of knowledge of materials, methods of construction, structural principles, air conditioning, acoustics and illumination design, and things related to realization of a building project such as specification, estimation and construction management.

The training of an architect also entails practical training in an architect's office and an independent researched project and dissertation. This is why the B.Arch. Course is of 5 year's duration in which one semester each is assigned to practical training and/or an independent project. In order to practice as an architect it is mandatory to have registration with the Council of architecture (he architecture Bill 1972 enacted by parliament).

In all major cities in India, buildings are permitted only if they are designed by qualified and registered architects. Because of the special nature of the profession the students desirous of joining this course must (besides clearing JEE) qualify in an aptitude test for Architecture.
