The GRE is administered by computer for ETS (Educational Testing Services). One of the main advantages of the test being computer administrated is that you can take the test almost any day of the year and should be available almost every week day of the year in a testing center near you. To take the test you will firstly have to register with ETS. The GRE test fee will be $99 (US) in the U.S., Canada, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico, $125 (US) elsewhere, as of October 1, 1999. You will have to pay this fee when you register for the GRE. Exactly how you register will depend on which country you live in. If you live in the U.S., Canada, U.S. territories, Puerto Rico and Canada call 1-800-GRE-CALL for more information on how to register or visit the U.S. registration page. For those outside the U.S. visit ETS's Regional Registration Centers page to find the registration centre that serves your part of the world. In general registration will involve calling your local registration center with a credit card on hand (to pay the registration fee) and two or three dates of when you would be able to take the test. If you book more than two weeks in advance there should be no problem getting the time and date you wish. Since the test is rarely available at the weekends you will probably have to take time off work to present the test. We, at Test Tutor, would strongly advise you to register for a morning test early in the week i.e. Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday because we all know that our concentration is much better at these times than on a Friday afternoon for example. Avoid going to work before the test if you can because you want to be at your tip top best when you take the GRE. ETS has strict identification procedures so that the test center ensures that you are who you say you are when you take the test. The test center will also make sure that you bring no study aids into the test. Most importantly you will not be able to use a dictionary, thesaurus or calculator in the test. You will be provided with a pencil, paper to take notes on and a computer on which you will present the test. |
