GRE - Frequently Asked Questions

The Verbal section of the GRE consists of a rapid 30 questions in 30 minutes, testing your reading comprehension, logic and grammar.

There are four types of questions:

  1. Reading Comprehension,

  2. Sentence Completions

  3. Analogies

  4. Antonyms

For all four types of questions, one must choose the best answer out of 5 answer choices. There is no order to these questions in the Verbal section, as they are intermingled throughout the section. However, Reading Comprehension questions usually come together in groups of 3-5 questions.

Reading Comprehension questions test your understanding of the content of short excerpts from articles on 1) science and technology, and 2) the humanities or social sciences. Despite the fact that the readings come from one of these two areas, no prior knowledge of the material is required nor expected.

Sentence Completion questions consist of sentences with either one or two blanks. You must fill in the blanks with the appropriate word(s), depending on the context and intended meaning of the sentence.

Analogy problems test your understanding of the relationships between words and concepts. The analogy consists of an original pair of words which describe some sort of relationship or meaning. You must choose the best of five two-word possibilities that expresses the same relationship, but using different words from the original pair.

Antonym problems test whether you understand the meaning of a particular word. A word is given, and you have to find the word among five answer choices that has an opposite meaning to the original.
